Developer Studio MDHR announced on Twitter that Cuphead was selected by the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, to receive this year’s Special Achievement Award.
According to the Annie Awards official website, the Special Achievement Award is “given to an individual, individuals, or a company for unique and outstanding achievement in animation not recognized by in other Annie Award categories.” The award is part of the Annie Award’s Juried Awards and is given by the Board of Directors of ASIFA-Hollywood by a unanimous vote.
Two of Cuphead’s lead animators, Hanna Abi-Hanna and Tina Nawrocki, were nominated for “Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in a Video Game.” Abi-Hanna was responsible for leading the animation for The Devil, Grim Matchstick, Beppi the Clown, and Werner Werman while Nawrocki lead the animation for Baroness Von Bon Bon, Hopus Pocus, Pirouletta, Tipsy Troupe, the Giant, Lobster, Porkrind, Dragonfly, and the death animation for The Devil. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy also join the list of nominees.
Cuphead has already won Best Visual Design and Xbox Game of the Year at the 35th Golden Joystick Awards. The game was also nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Score/Music, Best Independent Game, Best Action Game, and Best Debut Indie Game by The Game Awards. Winners of The Game Awards will be revealed live on Thrusday, December 7.
Cuphead recently released version 1.1.3, fixing a number of bugs, exploits, and other problems. This includes preventing players from creating armies of the second player Mugman, preventing crashes from various conditions, granting players the ability to unequip things from the equipment menu, and more.
